Despite the fact that I've worked as an Assistant Producer in Factual Entertainment for the past four years, moving genres means that I'm going to have to take a step or two down. So, I'm currently looking for any runner opportunities in scripted (comedy or drama, I'm not fussed which) and have found myself sending out emails to production companies with my CV attached, in the hope that someone at least reads it.
I'm not precious about my job role, I'm more than happy to be a runner IF changing genres really, truly means that I'll be starting from fresh.
BUT - I do want production companies to at least accept that whilst I might not currenty be a runner in drama and yes, my last credit was as a Casting Assistant Producer in Factual Entertainment, I do have heaps of transferable skills that means that I can certainly be a runner on your next production.
I've cast TV shows, which means a considerable amount of multitasking, thinking on your feet and dealing with a wide range of personalities. I've helped to manage teams and been in numerous meetings with Execs and Series Producers.
Before working in Television, I worked as an Assistant Producer in Commercials. Anyone who's worked on adverts will tell you that it's incredibly chaotic and low budget - so whilst I was busy AP'ing, I was often usually busy being an entire costume department, location manager, casting producer and runner on location.
Whilst I love the industry and truly, I do - it does need to accept that people with transferable skills (even from different parts of the industry) are more than capable of moving across and doing just as good of a job as those currently already doing those roles.
